While going on my morning walk, I often listen to Bhagavad Gita videos on youtube. I find that they ground me and rejuvenate me.
I came upon a video that I have referenced below and thought to share the three lessons from it with you.
Bhagavad Gita, the holy book of Hindus, builds in you the spiritual confidence that you have the power to make a change. It instills in you the understanding that you are far more powerful than the challenges you are going through.
- Summer, fall, winter and spring seasons keep coming and going. Just because seasons change we never stop performing our duties, we don’t stop our work regardless of how hot or cold the weather is. Similarly, we need to learn to tolerate our ups and downs, our good times and bad times, since both of them distract us from doing what we are meant to be doing.
- Our mind can be a friend or an enemy. As a friend, it will empower you. As an enemy, it will derail you from your work and purpose. E.g. if you are trying to get into the habit of waking up early in the morning and your alarm starts ringing, if your mind tells you its okay to not get up since you slept late last night or will start from tomorrow etc. then its your enemy. If it tells you to get up since you promised yourself you would and it will give you time to get things done, your mind is your friend. To be successful in life, you need to train your mind to be your friend.
- There is divinity everywhere. In nature, in people and elsewhere, we can look at the splendor of the creator in the creatures itself. Harboring negative feelings towards someone is in essence harboring negative feelings towards the creator. E.g. if someone is doing better than you, you may feel insecure, be envious, be jealous. Your thoughts are actually insulting the God within that person, since it is that divinity itself that is channeling that glory. But if you derive inspiration from that person, then you can use it to seek your aspirations. We are all instruments of god. Just as a musical instrument needs someone to play it, similarly, our body is doing what it is being bid to by the God. It does not mean that we have no control over our life. For instance if violin is out of tune, the violin player will not be able to play well. Our duty is to make sure that we keep the instrument – that is ourselves, well tuned. The way to do it is by using tools such as meditation, good books, correct friends and correct company.
